Sports grip rails
Whether it is a competitive sport or a recreational amateur sport, sport can cause injury. These injuries can affect limbs, body, head and teeth. To prevent injuries to teeth, sports mouthguards were invented. There are different types of mouthguards, the most effective being those that are custom-made for the specific set of teeth.

Dental and maxillofacial sports injuries
A bump or fall can cause damage to teeth in two ways. One is the direct impact on the teeth. This occurs mainly on the front teeth and more often on the upper front teeth. A part of the tooth may break off, or the whole tooth may move out of its socket, and in more serious cases it may fall out. The other typical injury is to the lower jawbone. In this case, the teeth can clash and damage each other. This type of injury, however, can affect not only the teeth but also the jaw joint, especially if the impact is from the chin. Injury or fracture of the jaw joint can lead to complications and should be avoided. In other words, you can see that it is worth doing everything possible to avoid these injuries.

What sports is it recommended for?
The most well-known sports are boxing and other contact martial arts. After 1920, the use of mouthguards in boxing became widespread and nowadays most people fortunately take it for granted that martial artists wear mouthguards. However, major sports organisations recommend the use of sports mouthguards in many more sports, not only in competitive sports but also in amateur sports.

Also covers the gums
The ideal sports mouthguard covers not only the teeth but also the gums. This absorbs the force of the impact and protects both the gum and the tooth socket.
Provides adequate protection
The ideal sports mouthguard is thick enough to provide adequate protection.
Not too thick
Communication between players, talking with the device in the mouth, is important. Modern, even 2-layer splints are no thicker than 4-5 mm.
A good fit
The ideal sports mouthguard fits snugly, not loose: this is also important because loose mouthguards can distract you from concentrating.
Protects the jaw joint
The ideal sports mouthguard maintains a jaw position that protects the jaw joint from any impact from the jaw tip.
What sports mouthguards are there?
Traditional sports mouthguards
- Pre-manufactured, factory-made sports mouthguards
The simplest sports mouthguards, because you just have to pick them off the shelf in a sports shop. However, these types of sports mouthguards do not fit the athlete’s teeth exactly and do not take into account individual characteristics (e.g. the crowding of the teeth). Different sizes are available, the athlete chooses the one that best fits his/her teeth, but they are often inadequate due to discomfort.
- Sports mouthguards adaptable in warm water
As in the first category, the outer frame of the device is prefabricated with a thermoplastic material inside. After a short time in hot water, the inner layer softens and, when placed on the teeth, cools down to take the shape of the teeth. Much more precise than the first category. The disadvantage is that it is thicker than custom made and this can make it difficult to get used to and communicate with, and the shape of the mouthguard cannot track down if someone has a narrowed arch or crowded dentition.
Custom-made sports mouthguards at Hermann Dental and Medical Health Centre
The most effective and comfortable sports mouthguard in sports dentistry. Because it is custom-made, the thickness of the sports mouthguard will be just right and can be adapted to any dentition, as it is made by measuring the dentition.
This is the result of a joint effort between a dentist and a dental technician.
For the fabrication, the patient has to visit the practice twice in person. It requires an impression (or oral scan) and definition of the bite, followed by a time when the sports mouthguard will be delivered.
The manufacturing process is therefore indeed longer than in the case of factory-made appliances, but the patient can be assured that the custom-made appliance is the best for them and the quality is of the highest standard in every respect.
We are proud to have helped thousands of patients over the past three decades. Their complete satisfaction is the guarantee of the unrivalled success of our treatments.
