What exactly is Sleep Full?

Since sleeping disorders have several causes, the most effective solution is a programme which affects the most causes at the same time.

For adults in our Sleep Full package after a thorough assessment we put together a programme which works on breathing, on training the muscles that contribute to the development of snoring, a kind of neurological groundwork, the supporting muscles of the body and we also provide a sleep improving device.

We also give advice on how to deal with stress, and there is a possibility for the assessment of eating habits and counselling concerning it. If necessary, we involve an ear-nose-throat specialist and a sleep specialist as well in the treatment. We produce a daytime rail, similar to the 3D printed one known from Sleep Light, as well in cases where a jaw joint problem or some other cause calls for it. The supplementary training is a programme which mainly builds on practicing at home. Dental sleep improving devices are basically made to pull forward the lower jaw bone during sleep. This is important because it keeps a section of the windpipe from collapsing and thus prevents snoring and apnea. The moving forward of the lower jaw bone also brings the tongue more forward which then cannot close together with the softer back part of the palate. A good sleep improving device is comfortable, brings the lower jaw bone forward as needed and enables an even fitting together of jaw bones and sets of teeth. 3D technology brought about a huge breakthrough in this area. Since everything happens digitally, including taking the impression of the teeth, the planning and the production as well, the device is so precise that it can be delivered by post to the patient’s home, it is not necessary to carve it or further fit it at the surgery. What is more, it is made of a material that is very resilient against braking and the grinding of teeth. Traditional, non-customized sleep improving devices have failed to work, only a very small number of patients can use them. The problem with earlier customized, laboratory-produced sleep improving devices is that they often break or wear out quickly. So the future obviously belongs to digital devices. There are many kinds of sleeping disorders. If waking up at night, perspiring, snoring, daytime fatigue are an issue then we are most probably dealing with a breathing type sleeping disorder. The at-home sleep examination can confirm this. With mild or semi severe sleeping disorders the sleep improving device works very well. Sleep Light for adults and for adolescents is an entry level package. It is chosen by patients who do not want to or cannot get a more intense treatment yet. For them it is not a problem to wear the rails overnight for years even. In fact, this can easily be built into one’s bedtime routine. If they want to move on from here, they usually target the Sleep Full package. We compile the intense package after a more detailed assessment. Its developing elements supplement the effects of the rails and even make it possible to omit the rails completely at a later point in time.

 

Full is a 3 month programme. It is extremely successful, the great majority of our patients are satisfied and they do not only tell us about the improvement of their sleep, but also that of jaw joint symptoms, or they experience even more significant changes like ringing in the ears or head-neck pains go away. In many cases not only the nighttime but also the daytime rails are also part of the treatment. That is, at the end of the successful programme we usually sit down and discuss the possibilities. There are three alternatives. We either stick to the wearing of both the nighttime and daytime rails until a final decision is made. Another possibility is that we stabilize the new and healthy jaw position by setting the ideal bite with an orthodontic treatment. The third possibility is that your own dentist does the final setting of the bite (or a dentist recommended by us) in a way that changes the chewing surface of the teeth.

During the Sleep Light programme we give you a nighttime sleep improving device. This device is so precise that it can be delivered to you by post, it is not necessary to hand it over in the surgery. Afterwards a follow-up examination is only needed if it has to be adjusted in some way or, in the case of a more severe sleeping disorder, it has to be measured with an at home sleep examination how much our device has improved our sleeping values. This is a fascinating question. In fact, there are several sides to the connection of COVID and sleep. These include anxiety, nightmares, snoring, fatigue, but we also have to highlight the high number of adolescent jaw joint problems.

In this stage of life lifestyle is of extremely great importance. Irregular sleeping habits and constant screen glare are the two key elements. At the same time when it comes to sports once again the extremes prevail, either a complete lack of sports is characteristic or an eviscerating (too intense and/or late afternoon or evening) sports activity and all of these are counterproductive to relaxing sleep. The treatment has roughly the same steps and techniques as sleep treatment for adults but with a great emphasis on the reforming of lifestyle.

We are aware that not stressing about things is easier said than done, it is very difficult to put it into practice. In fact, already small steps mean a lot. The basic principle is that it does not matter what happens around us but how we react to it. The small techniques of relaxing the body, winding down before going to bed can be the basics. These are followed by so-called Mindfulness practices, calming music, using scents and meditation. Our programme constantly develops. At present we only give practical advice (which is part of the booklet) but audio materials are in production and basic meditation advice and a coaching service as well.

 

A lot. First, there is the phenomenon of the so called leaky gut syndrome (increased intestinal permeability). This is a process in which certain types of food constantly irritate the intestinal wall and later get through it into the bloodstream, thus creating a permanent state of inflammation. This state of general irritation eventually transfers into the nervous system causing its tension to increase. This is why already with a change in nutrition depression and other mental and neurological conditions can be treated. During sleep the goal will also be to find out which food to avoid. This is shown by the food intolerance test. The other factor is partly connected to this and this is the composition of gut bacteria. The so called microbiome is an important part of human health that is only now being discovered by science. It can be examined what kind of bacteria we lack for functioning ideally and how they can be replaced. In this sense the third element is the intake of vitamins and microelements as well. The fourth factor is the timing of meals. Eating late and heavy food make it more difficult to fall asleep and keep the body from calming down. As far as we do not know about a direct injury, or spinal disc herniation, then most likely the popping of the jaw joint, the pain or locking thereof is connected to sleep. Sleeping is the time of regeneration. If during sleep we do not get to the appropriate stages of sleep, because our body constantly wakes up again and again, then neckpain, numbness of the arm, a headache and problems of the jaw joint appear. There is a great number of methods for treating these but medical science has figured out in the recent years that only with the inclusion of sleep treatment can these be treated effectively.  The situation is similar with the teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Ideally muscles are relaxed during sleep. If muscles activate, that is a sign of a sleeping disorder.
